Masters Project #1
Create and execute a survey. I hypothesized Music, with the primary aim being K-pop, Can be Good for You. I created a survey and dispersed it through social media, face-to-face requests, and the snowball method.
- Consider a subject I want to know more about and how to set up a controlled scientific experiment.
- Music, specifically K-pop, plays a massive role in my life. How do fans and other music consumers feel “music” affects them, especially at a self-esteem level?
- I used measuring methods for Self-Esteem, Self-love, and self-awareness. These factors were based on several peer-reviewed articles about the messages communicated from Artists to fans and fans to fans within their communities. It was also spurred by articles discussing mental health within these fan-based communities.
- I dispersed my survey through social media, asking others to share it with friends and family. During a Stray Kids concert, I actively shared a QR code and NFC chip to ask attendees to take my survey and share it with their friends on social media. I used Qualtrics to obtain this data.
- The data revealed that while self-esteem and self-awareness are moderate to high, the overall self-care is not correlated. This data crunching was done using SPSS and checking the reliability and validity of the measures used.
- My last question was qualitative, asking how the music they chose to highlight in the survey has affected them and what effects they have seen. This is where the data shows, without a doubt, that what people had to say was very moving. Many fans claimed to have been pulled out of depression or suicidal thoughts because of their favorite artists’ music. There were hundreds of stories about how K-Pop has helped individuals somehow.
